Root growth response drawing
A student investigated the effect of gravity on the growth of bean seedlings. The student put ink marks on the root of each bean seedling. Figure 5 shows a bean seedling with ink marks.
The student set up the stationary apparatus A and the slowly rotating apparatus B shown in Figure 6, then left both in a dark cupboard for 24 hours. Figure 7 shows one seedling from apparatus A at the start of the investigation and after 24 hours. The drawing after 24 hours is not complete.
Complete Figure 7 to show:
- the appearance of the root after 24 hours
- the ink marks on the root after 24 hours

Marking points
- 1 Completes the lower root so that it bends downwards.
- 2 Shows that the root is longer after 24 hours.
- 3 Spreads the ink marks in the bent region, not before the bend.
Full-mark answer
Complete the lower root so that it has grown longer and curves downward. Place the ink marks farther apart through the curved growth region, while marks before the bend remain close together.
Why this answer loses marks
Draw a longer straight root with the ink marks spread evenly everywhere.
This misses downward bending and places marker separation outside the bent growth region.
