Preparing an alkali for titration

Q09.3 3 marks

A student does a titration to find the volume of acid needed to neutralise an alkali. The student fills a burette with the acid.

Give three more steps the student must do before adding the acid to the alkali from the burette. You should name any equipment used.

Write your answer first. You can study the marking guidance whenever you need it.

Marking points

  1. 1 Includes using a volumetric pipette to transfer the alkali.
  2. 2 Includes one credited additional preparation step.
  3. 3 Includes a second distinct credited additional preparation step.

Full-mark answer

1. Use a volumetric pipette to transfer a measured volume of the alkali into a conical flask. 2. Add a few drops of a suitable indicator to the alkali. 3. Record the initial burette reading.

Why this answer loses marks

Rinse the burette, then start adding acid.

The burette is already filled; prepare a measured alkali sample and distinct pre-release setup details.
