Choosing fructose for a drink

Q01.1 2 marks

Drinks contain different substances. A drinks company claims that a drink contains sugar, protein and fat.

Glucose and fructose are different sugars. Fructose has a much sweeter taste than glucose.

Suggest two reasons why the drinks company uses fructose in the drink rather than using glucose. Do not refer to sweetness in your answer.

Write your answer first. You can study the marking guidance whenever you need it.

Marking points

  1. 1 Identifies that less fructose / sugar is needed.
  2. 2 Gives a qualified financial reason such as lower production cost, less sugar tax, or greater profit.
  3. 3 Links the choice to less energy / fewer calories in the drink and consumer appeal.

Full-mark answer

Less fructose is needed to make the drink, so it can be cheaper to produce. Using less sugar can also reduce the energy content of the drink, which may make people more likely to buy it.

Why this answer loses marks

Fructose is sweeter.

The task explicitly excludes sweetness, so this gives neither an accepted qualified benefit nor a second distinct reason.
