Hormonal control of metabolic rate

Q04.1 2 marks

Rat populations can increase rapidly. When rat populations are large there is competition between rats.

When rats compete, the basal metabolic rate of the rats increases. Basal metabolic rate is controlled in the same way in humans and in rats. Describe how basal metabolic rate is increased.

Write your answer first. You can study the marking guidance whenever you need it.

Marking points

  1. 1 States that secretion/release of thyroxine or adrenaline increases.
  2. 2 Correctly pairs thyroxine with the thyroid gland or adrenaline with the adrenal gland.

Full-mark answer

More thyroxine is secreted from the thyroid gland, which increases basal metabolic rate.

Why this answer loses marks

More insulin is released.

Insulin regulates blood glucose rather than providing either credited basal-metabolic-rate route; use a matching hormone and gland pair.
