Phytomining area calculation
Nickel is produced by phytomining.
One hectare of plants produces 215 kg of nickel.
One hectare = 10 000 m²
Determine the area required to produce 750 kg of nickel. Give your answer in m².
Write your answer first. You can study the marking guidance whenever you need it.

Marking points
- 1 Uses 750 ÷ 215 to obtain hectares, or correctly converts the yield to kg/m².
- 2 Obtains 3.49 hectares or carries out the equivalent division using 0.0215 kg/m².
- 3 Converts the area to 34 900 m² (3.49 × 10⁴ m²).
Full-mark answer
Area in hectares = 750 ÷ 215 = 3.488… hectares. Converting to square metres: 3.488… × 10 000 = 34 883.7… m², which rounds to 34 900 m².
Why this answer loses marks
Stops after finding the required area in hectares.
