1 Use the mean to set up the total for five measurements: $97\times5=(96+99+97+X+97)$ .
2 Calculate $X=96\ \mathrm{mm}$ .

Full-mark answer

The total of the five measurements is $97\times5=485$ . The known measurements add to $96+99+97+97=389$ . Therefore $X=485-389=96\ \mathrm{mm}$ .

Why this answer loses marks

97 mm

This copies the mean rather than calculating the missing measurement needed to give that mean.
