Road safety at a reduced speed
The speed limit on many roads in towns is 13.5 m/s. Outside schools this speed limit is often reduced by one-third. A reduced speed limit may reduce air pollution.
Explain one other advantage of a reduced speed limit.
Write your answer first. You can study the marking guidance whenever you need it.

Marking points
- 1 Give a valid advantage linked to road safety: for example, reduced speed reduces stopping distance.
- 2 Explain the consequence of that advantage: for example, the shorter stopping distance gives less chance of a collision.
- 3 Alternatively, state that the car has less kinetic energy at the lower speed.
- 4 Then explain that less kinetic energy means the car is less likely to cause injury in a collision.
Full-mark answer
A reduced speed limit reduces the stopping distance of cars, so there is less chance of a collision.
Why this answer loses marks
It reduces air pollution.
The question asks for one other advantage, because reduced air pollution is already given in the question.
