Marking points
- 1 Explains how energy use or demand can be made more sustainable.
- 2 Uses Figure 16a and/or Figure 16b evidence.
- 3 Adds own understanding of sustainable energy-use methods.
- 4 Avoids focusing only on sustainable energy generation.
Full-mark answer
Energy use can be made more sustainable by reducing demand. Figure 16a shows insulation, double glazing and efficient boilers, which reduce heat loss so less energy is needed for heating. Switching off TVs and laptops also reduces electricity use. Figure 16b shows an electric vehicle charging point, which can encourage lower-emission transport if electricity is from cleaner sources. Wider methods include low-energy appliances, public transport and laws that phase out petrol and diesel vehicles.
Why this answer loses marks
Use renewable energy such as solar panels.
The mark scheme for Q06.5 says the focus must be demand reduction and energy use; sustainable generation alone is not credited.
