The effects of war on those involved

Q03.1 20 marks

Section A part a. Extract 1 from Animal Farm takes place just after the Battle of the Windmill. Extract 2 from The Night Watch takes place in a World War II ambulance station after a raid.

Compare how the effects of war on those involved are presented in these two extracts. You should consider: the situations and experiences faced by the characters; how the characters react to these situations and experiences; how the writers' use of language and techniques creates effects.

Marking points

  1. 1 Compares both war extracts.
  2. 2 Uses references and analyses language/techniques.
  3. 3 May discuss propaganda, camaraderie, mood contrast, repetition, parallelism or antithesis.

Why this answer loses marks

War makes the animals tired, while the ambulance workers joke around.

The contrast is relevant, but it needs method analysis such as mood, parallelism or presentation of Squealer.
