Complicated relationships between parents and children

Q05.1 20 marks

Section A part a. Extract 1 shows Margaret and Jackie after Rosie says she will live with Jackie. Extract 2 shows Chopper and Bomber discussing Chopper's son Mostyn while trapped underground.

Compare how complicated relationships between parents and children are presented in these two extracts. You should consider: the situations and experiences faced by the characters; how the characters react to these situations and experiences; how language and dramatic features create effects.

Marking points

  1. 1 Compares parent-child relationships in both extracts.
  2. 2 Analyses language and dramatic features.
  3. 3 May discuss lost years, threat, family context, bathos, repetition or lexical field.

Why this answer loses marks

The parents and children do not get on because of the past.

The idea is relevant, but it needs both extracts and analysis of dramatic methods.
